What is Ozone Sanitation?

What is electrolytic ozone?

Electrolytic ozone is created by passing an electrical current through water to break the oxygen (O2) molecules into oxygen atoms (O). The O3 made in this way is useful for a number of different applications and is a powerful sanitizing agent for cleaning water, water systems, and other machinery.

This method is very simple, efficient, and effective. Electrolytic ozone is especially useful for sanitizing water systems to create clean, microbe-free water. Because the ozone can be created inside the water system, contamination is kept to a minimum and can be well managed and controlled.

How electrolytic ozone is made

Electrolytic ozone can be made with electrolytic ozone generators (EOGs). These systems use two core technologies to generate ozone from water. The first technology is called direct (or inline) electrolysis. It can generate ozone from tap water and is generally used in commercial applications such as sanitizing beverage-making equipment in coffee shops, bars, and restaurants. 

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology is another electrolytic ozone technology used in industrial applications. In this process, water is introduced to the anode side of the electrolysis cell, electrolytically decomposed, converted to ozone, and mixed with the ozone water formed in the compact cell.

Ozonated water generated through an EOG can sanitize and disinfect beverage dispensers, kitchen surfaces, dental equipment, and other environments prone to collect bacteria over time. The installation of electrolytic ozone generators is an effective way of sanitizing water. Ozone is produced from the water being treated and as such there are no contaminants, nor is there a need for the use of chemicals or additional treatment steps.

What are the main advantages of electrolytic ozone compared to traditional ozone systems?

Electrolytic ozone improves on this with a concentration of more than 20wt%, and BES systems can achieve up to 28 percent concentration. This purity data can mean a lot to ozone applications in water in terms of dissolution and efficiency.

  3. Ozone is created in the water it’s disinfecting
    Electrolytic ozone can be created inside the water that it is disinfecting. Therefore, no outside contamination is introduced into the system being treated, keeping the water from being recontaminated after disinfection.

    There is no need to worry about excess ozone in the system and having to remove it, such as the chemical residues left over by chlorine and other chemical disinfectants

Ozone is one of the world’s most powerful oxidizing agents, as it readily removes organic and microorganisms and pollutants in water supplies. Ozone is a molecular compound of three oxygen atoms (O3), in which two oxygen atoms from the basic oxygen molecule (O2 – the oxygen that humans breathe) and contains a third oxygen atom that can easily detach from the ozone compound and reattach to other molecules. When this third oxygen atom, called a radical, attaches to the molecules of other substances, it can break down their structure and destroy them.

How does Ozonation work?

Ozonation is the infusion of ozone with water to both disinfect water and to be used as a disinfection agent for a variety of applications and industries. During ozonation, ozone directly attacks the surface layer of microorganisms and destroys their cell walls, as it is a highly reactive oxidant. When ozone is added to water, it quickly dissolves contaminants without any changes to the composition of water and introduces no odor or taste. Substances that the oxide atoms will react with include iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. Ozone is also very effective in eliminating biological matter in the water like bacteria or viruses. After the chemical ionization is finished, the water then goes through a post-filtration process to remove any particulate matter that was created in the process. The final water supply is then completely free of impurities. That means it is ready for use in a number of applications in the medical, dental, and food sanitation industries among others.

Is ozone water safe? 

In fact, ozonation has been proven to be safer and more effective than chlorination for water treatment. The process has been approved by the US FDA since 2001, and it’s the preferred method for purifying, food-processing and bottling across a range of industries to kill bacteria and viruses, and without leaving chemical residues as chlorine does.

Because of the unstable nature of the O3 molecule, we don’t need to worry about any residual dangers from the ozonation process. There is also no effect of the process on a water’s pH balance. US Government Approval of Ozone

Ozone water has received a number of certifications by governing bodies. In 2001, the US FDA approved ozonated water as an Antimicrobial Agent for Direct Contact With Food of all types (Federal Register 66(123):33829-33830, June 26, 2001). In the early 1980s, the FDA approved ozone as a disinfectant for bottled water and as a sanitizer for bottled water processing lines. In 1999, the US FDA turned over its responsibilities for “sanitizers” to the US EPA, and EPA refers to ozone as a “sanitizer” for direct contact with food and for disinfection of commercial food processing equipment.

The fact that ozone does not leave any chemical residues as chlorination does makes ozone a preferred method for disinfection by more and more business owners who want to leave a lighter touch on the environment in their daily operations. There are numerous cost benefits over the long term to ozone sanitation systems, leading ozone to become more widely adopted by dentists, hospitality, food and beverage, and commercial cleaning and laundry industries.

Ozone has gone through a long and arduous path to approval. Almost everyone who’s worked in the food and beverage industry knows that cleaning and disinfection of commercial kitchens and water lines are critical for keeping customers safe from bacterial infections. Chlorine has been traditionally used as a common method to disinfect surfaces and clean beverage water lines. But there’s an up-and-coming challenger in the arena of disinfection: Ozone water, otherwise known as ozone.

How it Works

Closely related to the oxygen molecule, ozone is naturally occurring, but its molecular composition makes it more reactive. It’s because of that molecular reactivity that ozone makes such a great disinfectant. (For more details on that process, read our previous blog post here.

Ozone is incredibly reactive with impure materials that end up in the water. This means that impurities, like iron, manganese, and biological pathogens instantly react with one of the atoms in the ozone compound. For biological matter, this means instant neutralization. Once the impurities are separated from the water molecules (H2O), they can be easily removed with a conventional filter. What’s left of the ozone molecule then turns back into oxygen, safe and stable once again. 

Chlorine vs Ozone in Water Purification

Chlorine has been the traditional chemical process for water purification for decades. So let’s consider some of the reasons and compare the effectiveness of ozone as a better alternative. 

Chlorine has traditionally been the most widely used product for water treatment in the world. Using it requires a simple process that the average person can easily handle by adding the right amount of chlorine to the water in liquid or tablet form. Chlorine is effective because, in water, the chemical is capable of bypassing the cellar structure of almost any bacteria and neutralizing it (with very few exceptions, such as cryptosporidium).  However, the chlorination process may take long periods of time depending on the volume of water being treated.

In contrast, ozonation is equally effective at neutralizing bacteria or viruses, but it gets the job done within seconds. Ozone dissolves into the water making a highly concentrated ozonated water solution. 1ppm of ozonated water is equivalent to a 50ppm chlorine solution, resulting in excellent oxidation performance. Some reports suggest that ozonation is 3,000 times faster than chlorination in disinfecting water. Ozonation can also eliminate that pesky cryptosporidium pathogen mentioned above. If water can be so thoroughly disinfected by ozone in such a short amount of time, then why isn’t everyone using ozone? 

Ozone has been misunderstood for decades due to a general lack of education and fierce lobbying of the chemical industry. Additionally, while chlorine is transferred in vats, ozone has been traditionally more difficult to store, much less transport any large amount very far. This means that for ozone to be applied at a water treatment facility, it needs to be generated on the spot. This can be done by exposing oxygen to electrical charges, known as electrolytic ozone generation. Compared to dropping chlorine tablets into a pool of water, the ozonation process has been known to be more involved. That is changing with the emergence of ozone generators.

The dangers of chlorine

Chlorine releases chemical residue that can be dangerous to us if ingested. They also leave a chemical taste in the water that is treated. Some studies suggest that chlorine in drinking water can increase the risk of cancer. Regular chlorination will also cause these residues to affect the equipment and the nearby environment. 

Ozonation, however, when safely done, results in clean water with no chemical residues. In fact, ozone removes the residual byproducts left over from the chlorination process. Studies have also shown that chlorination is not as effective in bodies of water with a high alkaline pH. Meanwhile, ozonation is equally effective across the pH spectrum without altering the water’s pH level. 

Ozone generators: a threat to chlorine 

Until recently, the ozonation process for water treatment has not been as widely used as chlorination, even though it has been recognized by experts for its effectiveness. In the past, using ozone required a skilled technician to manage the creation of the ozone. Over the last several years, however, the technology required for ozonation has become more compact and safer to use for the average consumer. Ozonation doesn’t create dangerous byproducts within the water itself. After ozonation and a simple filtration process, the water will be free of impurities. Chlorine however will leave trace residues in the water that it treats. 

Ozonated water generators have become a threat to chlorine solutions in their ability to eliminate problems related to chlorine use. These include chemical storage and handling issues, the problems and cost associated with chemical transportation, the significant chemical carbon footprint, and the role of human error when it comes to mixing chemical solutions. As a result, ozone is quickly becoming a better option for water treatment. 

Ozone for health and a sustainable Earth

Comparisons of chlorine and ozone for water purification note that, while ozone’s oxidation and disinfectant ability is formidable, buying and installing the necessary equipment is not as cost-effective as chlorine. However, with technological developments and BES electrolytic ozone generators, the process of ozonation for water purification is becoming more convenient and much more affordable, with obvious cost savings over the mid to long term.

Water is an essential part of life, humans are made up of more than 70 percent water. It’s safe to say that we should make water and its cleanliness a top priority in our societies. What is ozone?

We all know that oxygen (O2) is essential to all living organisms. Trees and plants help to produce it, animals and microorganisms require it for respiration. Oxygen molecules are made up of two oxygen atoms, but what happens when a third oxygen atom gets added? We get ozone. Ozone (O3) occurs naturally in the atmosphere, and forms a layer in the stratosphere that helps to block harmful UV sun rays from reaching the surface of the earth. In its natural state, Ozone is a pale blue gas with a pungent odor.

How is ozone made?

Ozone is made naturally in the atmosphere when the oxygen we breathe (O2) is split apart into single oxygen atoms by sunlight. The free oxygen atoms can rejoin to form O2 or can attach onto an O2 molecule to form O3. When lightning strikes, ozone is formed, which helps to create the fresh smell that we can sometimes experience after a storm.

It is also possible to manufacture ozone. Using electric ozone generators, a high voltage can be passed through a stream of water to split some of the O2 molecules and therefore allow some of the free O atoms to attach to O2 molecules and create O3, or ozone. This form of ozone is known as electrolytic ozone. Ozone can be produced by UV lamps as well, but only in small quantities that are not always sufficient for a complete disinfection process. Due to the highly reactive nature of ozone, it is difficult to store and needs to be constantly generated for use.

What can ozone do?

Trace ozone in the atmosphere helps to maintain a balance of bacteria present in the air by neutralizing pathogenic bacteria. Ozone in the form of ozone water or ozonated water is an extremely powerful oxidizing agent and makes an excellent disinfectant that can work up to 3,000 times faster than chlorine, and can be 50 times as effective in disinfecting. Ozone can also remove odors and biofilm as well as degrading pesticides, chemical residues, and other trace contaminants. These factors, and more, make ozone one of the most effective and efficient disinfectants on the planet.

Although ozone can be toxic in extremely high concentrations, the process of creating ozonated water is easily controlled using known volumes of water and its characteristic smell can alert technicians to any issues during the process.

What happens when we put them together?

Ozone is highly soluble in water (up to 13 times more soluble than O2). When ozone is added to water, a thorough disinfection and sanitationsterilization of bacteria and harmful microbes occurs. This results in clean water. Using electrolysis, it is possible to create the ozone from the very water that is being treated with no by-products. The ozone simply reverts back to oxygen after a short time (the half-life of ozone is notoriously short).

How is ozone used to disinfect water?

Although ozone has been used to clean water systems for more than 100 years, it was not until recently both consumers and industry professionals have begun to fully understand the benefits of using ozone, including approval by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2001. Electrolysis systems can be introduced to the water disinfection and purification process to create ozone, cleansing the water of bacteria and impurities whilst maintaining the pH balance. The electrolysis process splits O2 molecules to create free O atoms that can form O3 molecules. The ozone completes a disinfection cycle before returning to O2 molecules.

What are the benefits of ozonated water?
